Book Review – Rabbit on the Moon

With Vesak coming up soon, I thought I’d work on some activities for Junior to enjoy and understand why we celebrate Vesak. To start off with we are doing a reading of Rabbit on the Moon by Jagath Asoka.

I remember one Poya Day looking up at the Moon and telling Junior that there is a rabbit on the moon, this bought about a whole lot of questions! How did the rabbit get up there? Did he go in a rocket? But, Mama! How can the rabbit breathe up there? I quickly back tracked, I had either probably heard about the story when I was a lot younger (ahem!!) or heard just a snippet of it, either way I meant to look it up and never did. So when I saw this book, I knew that this was one of the books that I wanted to read to Junior this Vesak.

This book is beautifully written. Jagath Asoka the author himself says that it was written with the purpose of younger children reading it themselves and it clearly works. Simple sentences and vocabulary that kids can understand. It’s illustrated nicely enough. Junior loved the book and patiently listened to the story till the end.

If you are looking for a book to read to your little one to teach about selflessness and sharing what you have and developing kindness and empathy, this is a wonderful book and wonderful story.
