LeapFrog LeapReader Review

IMG_1627I’ve always been a believer that there are many ways to get your child to learn apart from traditional learning. I am also a firm believer that if your child learns certain concepts through play, they tend to stick better and they actually learn the concept behind what they are learning.

Very young children absorb information at an amazing speed. The concepts they can understand and the amount of information they can hold in their little brains are amazing! We as parents need to fuel this in a non competitive and age appropriate manner. Finding the right toys that can engage them and help them develop their skills is very important and if you are buying toys from reputed toy manufacturers you are bound to come across products that will help develop their intellectual skills and motor skills as well.

In today’s post, I am going to talk about the LeapFrog LeapReader ‘toy’ which is a wonderful learning toy that is meant for 4-8 year olds.

So, I rather love ‘gadgety’ new toys! New age toys have that technological advancement that get young kids totally excited! For some time now I have been thinking of getting Junior an ereader to help him read more. I’ve sort of been in two minds, going back and forth, but never quite getting him one since I didn’t want him going ‘off’ traditional books. The love of reading and books start young and holding a book, turning its pages is such an awesome feeling!  If you like I want your little one to start loving books, then LeapReader is the right product. What I love most about it is that it is just the right amount of being‘gadgety’! It’s not a total electronic product like a tab or a mini computer but has the right amount of technology to keep your child entertained.IMG_1628

The LeapFrog LeapReader is sort of a starter pack that comes with the LeapReader Pen and a sampler book that consists of extracts of other LeapReader books available. The kit also consists of a USB charger. I seriously got excited when I saw that it could be charged with a USB and not pesky batteries! (This means charging during road trips is not a problem!!) The booklet has extracts from different other books that you can purchase from the LeapReader range. Among the books are Monstors Inc, Disney Cars, Finding Nemo, Brave, Leap & The Lost Dinasaur and Interactive World Map Puzzle. IMG_1630IMG_1717

Before starting, you need to give the LeapReader an initial charge which does not take too long. Thereafter you can go online and register your LeapReader and connect & download some awesome free content (which includes audio books, music and other trivia).

Once you have setup your device, you can use the Pen to help your child ‘read’ the book. When the Pen is pointed at the Book Icon, the reader will start to read out the story to your child. After reading out the page, there are certain activities your child can do. Your child can learn more vocabulary, identify words with short and long vowel sounds and also improve comprehension as there are questions about the page the reader just read! It’s all very’ gadgety’ without going over the edge.IMG_1718

These are some of the different things that can be done with the LeapReader after reading out the page

The LeapReader is not just about story books, there’s also science and geography covered which is a completely interactive and sneaky way of introducing your child to early science & geography! The Leap Reading Series include books about the Solar System & The Human Body. I’m completely impressed with the books in this series.IMG_1719 IMG_1720 IMG_1721 IMG_1722

What’s also lovely about the way the LeapReader is designed is that it is not too loud. It’s just right for it to be non-intrusive to everyone around you and in addition, it has been designed with a headphone jack which makes it perfect if you want to take it with your child on a road-trip or to a doctor’s appointment! Toys manufactured by reputed toy manufacturers spend time on R&D as well as making sure that these products are safe for your child to usw. This is a perfect example of such a toy as it is well designed for long term use. Your child will be completely entertained by it, first by the novelty of having a ‘talking’ device and secondly by interacting with it!IMG_1724

The LeapReader is not just a reading device. The Pen also has an inbuilt lead tip that introduces and helps children learn to write. For a child who is preparing to go into mainstream school and or is in preschool, this is wonderfully helpful! If you run the pencil the wrong way, the LeapReader prompts you and explains the correct way of writing!! It’s not much like Mummy saying that’s the wrong way of writing!! Somehow when it’s a gadget doing the corrections, the little ones learn better!!!IMG_1723

The Read & Write books include learning to write uppercase & lowercase letters, numbers, words & science!! The downloaded content also include songs, for when your little one needs a change after reading and playing, there’s some music to keep him entertained!

The LeapFrog LeapReader is an absolutely lovely educational toy that will help your child learn many concepts such as reading, writing, listening, comprehension and learn concepts in subjects such as science & geography. Productive play & learning through play is made easier with this wonderful device. Also just a note to end, you know those times, you’re stuck in the kitchen making dinner and your little one is watching a Peppa the Pig video or something else on TV, this is a better and more productive way to spend his time!
