So, I’m particularly happy to be writing this post! Sri Lankan Mom Khanzah, living in Australia at present has asked Mumsibles a recommendation for books that she can read to her year old Baby Boy!
So here goes!!
What you should be looking for particularly in book for this age group are obviosuly colourfully illustrated books with SHORT SENTENCES. In addition, LIFT-THE-FLAP books are extremely engaging. I would personally not recommend large pop-up books at this stage – little hands pulling at delicate pops up may not be a good idea! But it does depends on the book and really on you! 🙂
What else do I particularly look for in book for this age? Books and stories that will increase vocabulary – you can start with books that have rhymes – be them traditional nursery rhymes or rhymes on counting from 1-5 and even just plain counting books 1-5. I wouldn’t want to go beyond 5-10 for numbering books, at least not until your little one has mastered counting and identifying 1-5 properly – and later you can get books which do 1-10.
There are also wonderful books that promotes sensorial development, where pictures are textured to show reflective surfaces, fuzzy & grainy surfaces etc. I highly recommend these too as children start to explore illustrations and books.
So, I’ll talk less and go straight to listing me favourite books! Anything along these lines would be really good, but these would be easy to get hold off 🙂
Curious Baby Counting (Curious Baby Curious George) H. A. Rey (Author)
The Cat in the Habitat Flap Book (Dr. Seuss/Cat in the Hat) (Big Lift-and-Look Book) [Board book]Tish Rabe (Author), Joe Mathieu (Illustrator), Aristides Ruiz (Illustrator) ISBN-10: 0307929639
Fisher-Price Little People Lift-the-Flap Cars, Trucks, Planes and Trains by Fisher-Price(TM) and Nancy L. Rindone (Jun 28, 2011)
Most of these books are hardboard books but books made out of fabric and waterproof bath time books are also fun and it’s definetely worth getting some!
If you have a favourite book that your little one enjoys, please do share and add it to the list!
