Review – The Amazing Racist

amazingracist

I’ve seen this book sometime earlier this year as it was released but if you know anything about me, you’d know that I always always have a ton in my To-Read-List and unless I hear a recommendation either from a friend or from Goodreads, I don’t add that book into the list. To be fair, it’s not that I haven’t heard good things about the book, I had. It’s just that It wasn’t from anyone I knew personally and that matters!

So when I saw a friend of mine, who has very similar taste in reading to me, share the Amazing Racist by Chimmi Tendulf-La on Facebook as probably one of the best books he has read, I thought I really had to give it a try. Especially since I had been reading Jodi Picoult books, back to back and needed a break!

I had already searched the Amazon Store and knew this book was available on the Kindle, but something told me that this was going to be the kind of book I’d want in my physical library so I rushed to Barefoot and grabbed a copy (along with four other books, sigh!).I started this book a few minutes after I bought it. (Yes, I started reading in the car!)

he first thing that you notice about the book is the author’s writing style. Mostly short sentences, loaded heavily but tastefully with humour that is very natural. You notice instantly that there is nothing forceful or fake about his writing style. According to my friend’s recommendation, The Amazing Racist was one of the funniest books he has read and I do agree with him completely. It will crack you up, constantly. As the plot progresses, you notice a depth to the story that I didn’t expect. There is a story behind all that comedy and it a beautiful and unexpected one. I won’t include any spoilers in this post as I think it’s best you read it and experience it yourself.

For a debut novel, Chimmi Tendulf-La’s Amazing Racist is brilliant. It has everything you’d want in a novel – comedy, a proper plot, human feelings and depth. I highly recommend it. A must read that will touch you deeply. I laughed out more than once while I was waiting at a Doctor’s appointment, the humour is so rich and is the kind where you’ll snort out laughing and if you are Asian, you’ll appreciate it even more. I finished reading The Amazing Racist in one and half days, I read into the nights and loved every minute of it. So grab your copy, I guarantee you’d enjoy it… loads!
